Our Story

We are Cwm Taf Morgannwg Mind, a local and independent charity proudly providing mental health support services to the communities of Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Bridgend. We are your Local Mind.

Hello and Welcome!
Helo a Chroeso!

We’re #YourLocalMind providing mental health support services to people in Merthyr Tydfil, Bridgend and Rhondda Cynon Taf.

Background

Cwm Taf Morgannwg Mind (formerly Merthyr and the Valleys Mind) was established in 1985 by a group of volunteers who provided ‘drop-in’ sessions for people in the local area with mental health problems. Today, the charity supports around 4000 people a year through a number of projects across Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Bridgend. The team consists of wonderful and passionate staff (practitioners, counsellors and operational staff), a Board of Trustees and volunteers. We are an independent charity, raising our own funds and providing tailored services for our communities. We are a charitable company, registered with and regulated by the Charity Commission for England & Wales (Charity No. 1123615) and Companies House (Company No. 6541083).

The Mind Federation

Cwm Taf Morgannwg Mind is proud to be Your Local Mind, providing mental health support services to the communities of Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Bridgend. Cwm Taf Morgannwg Mind is one of over 100 local Mind organisations affiliated to the national charity Mind, the leading mental health charity in England & Wales.

Each Local Mind is an independent charity rooted in it’s community, and together with Mind National, Mind Cymru and Mind Retail we all form the Mind Federation. To find your Local Mind in Wales outside of the area we serve, please click here. While each Local Mind delivers unique services shaped by local needs, the Mind Federation is united by shared values and standards set through Mind National. This connection gives us the strength and support of a trusted national charity while celebrating the independence and creativity of local organisations, ensuring people get high-quality mental health support. To run Mind services, every part of the Mind Federation must work to achieve the Mind Quality Mark (MQM) every 3 years. The MQM is a framework of standards we use to ensure the quality of our work across National Mind, Local Minds, and Mind shops, and set out what we all need to do to be well-run, sustainable organisations, to make sure we’re achieving a positive impact for people with mental health problems.

We are incredibly proud that Cwm Taf Morgannwg Mind achieved the Mind Quality Mark (MQM) Award in April 2026, which is a guarantee that our charity:

  • Is well run
  • Delivers safe and effective services
  • Lives the Mind vision, mission and values

The Mind Federation is a powerful voice for mental health in England and Wales who provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem and campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding. Together, we can reach more people in more places and become an even more powerful force for good.
